AlzAuthors: Karen Kaplan's Sci-Fi Dementia Novel

By Karen B. Kaplan

Perhaps it is not often that you come across science fiction that is (1) gentle and not full of weapons and nasty robots, and (2) includes a character who is one of the first with dementia to get cured of the disease. There are so many other aspects of reality to ponder, such as how robots might help or hinder grievers, it is a wonder that science fiction writers have not provided more material on such things. (Have you ever noticed that the Star Trek crew does not include a spiritual counselor?) As a healthcare chaplain, I have been curious about what it might be like to be cured of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Virginia Boyden, financial planner of the main characters, is one of those first lucky persons to be a “dementia returnee.” Virginia shares what it was like to get dementia, as well as what happened on the return trip. A temporary detour to complete health does arise, but Virginia figures out how to handle it.

Perhaps reading about dementia in upbeat fantasy might help us indulge in the comfort and hope that such fantasy can provide. It offers a different perspective, especially when the main characters Gomer and Muriel Ackerman try to grapple first with their financial planner’s decline, and then the issues that arise as she recovers. Here is an excerpt:

Build Your Brand By Teaching Others

photo by enterlinedesign via Dollar Photo Club

Two years ago I published a book not knowing anything about promotion, marketing, branding, or platform. Now I teach aspiring authors how to independently publish their own books. I let all of the knowledge I've gained over the last two years and more pour out of me, and provide them with the tools they need to get started on their own journeys.

Establishing yourself as a writer can take many different avenues. My approach is two-pronged. Like most indie authors I have a consistent social media presence and a website and blog, all updated frequently. I'm active in online groups. I have an email list and a newsletter. But reaching out to readers and building a brand online is just one facet of my author life. Another is to build a reputation as an author within my own community. One way I do this is through teaching. This helps establish my credibility as an author, as someone who knows what she's doing, and as a leader.

It all started when my local library invited me to teach a 90-minute seminar on self-publishing. I developed a presentation with Power Point called Adventures in Publishing: How to Independently Publish Your Own Book. Twelve people showed up. They asked lots of questions and stayed to the end. They wrote wonderful reviews. This gave me confidence to expand my program.

I added additional content and graphics and beefed it up to two hours. I knew once I had a polished program I could present it to new audiences again and again and my time and efforts would pay off. Next I spoke to the people in the continuing education department at the community college where I work and asked them to add my class to their course catalog. They quickly agreed. I also hit up the employee education department and they too added me to their schedule, although this class was a watered down one-hour version. Most of these classes were well attended and well received, but a few had to be cancelled due to low enrollment.

I continued to refine and improve my presentation, and sought new venues to present my program. I reached out to a private college thirty minutes from home and proposed the course to their continuing education department. Based on my experiences at the community college they readily agreed. I am now teaching several classes at each college per semester.

The program evolved once more after many attendees  wrote on their evaluation forms that the program was too short; they wanted more. I expanded the class to two two-hour sessions called Write Release Retail: How to Become an Indie Author. The first session is on writing a book and preparing it for publication; the second focuses on marketing and promotion.

One of the perks of these presentations is the opportunity to sell books, not by the truckload, but one at a time, hand to hand. It's a soft sell but invariably someone asks to buy a book and others follow. They are always front and center in my display and serve as the textbook for my program.

And I get paid for talking to aspiring authors about publishing their work. The community college gives me an hourly rate and I split the fees with the private college 50/50. I'm not getting rich, but it's one more example of my credibility.

I love teaching. It's one way I build my reputation as an author on a local level. It gives me confidence to continue with this endeavor, even on those days when I wonder "Why am I doing this? Should I be doing this?" Self-publishing is the most difficult thing I've ever done, but my students inspire me and renew my faith in my own abilities.

New Release! Keely Brooke Keith's Uncharted Inheritance

You know the feeling you get when you're completely immersed in a book, caught up tight in the story, not wanting to put it down, and impatient to get back to it when you must? That's the feeling I got when I listened to the first two installments in Keely Brooke Keith's The Uncharted Series. The author kindly gifted me an audiobook version of both The Land Uncharted and Uncharted Redemption for an honest review. The series is a blend of romance, historical fiction, and science fiction written with surprising mastery by this talented new writer. Keely Brooke Keith is an author to watch. Read through to enter the giveaway for a complete ebook collection of The Uncharted Series.

From the opening pages of The Land Uncharted, narrated by Kate Fisher, I was mesmerized by the story of this undiscovered land and its people locked in a time and way of life from the early part of the last century, and completely out of touch with the rest of the world. Fisher's reading, while slow at times, seems a good fit with the book's formal tone and the characters' old-fashioned speech, although at times it seemed robotic, almost as though Siri was reading the story.

Description:
Lydia Colburn is a young physician dedicated to serving her village in the Land. When injured fighter pilot Connor Bradshaw’s parachute carries him from the war engulfing the 2025 world to her hidden land, his presence threatens her plans, her family, and the survival of her preindustrial society. As Connor searches for a way to return to his squadron, his fascination with life in the Land makes him protective of Lydia and her peaceful homeland, and Lydia’s attraction to Connor stirs desires she never anticipated. Written like a historical, set like a sci-fi, and filled with romance, The Land Uncharted weaves adventure and love in this suspenseful story of a hidden land.

In Book Two,  Uncharted Redemption, read by Misty of Echoing Praise, the story continues with suspense, romance, drama, revenge, and redemption. The narrator's performance is engaging and believable, well-paced and natural.

Description:  Breaking from the Land’s tradition, Levi Colburn begins to build his own house outside the village—across the road from Mandy Foster to be exact. Though he hopes to marry Mandy someday, she rejected him once and has been unattainable to every man in the village ever since. When rebels tear through Good Springs and abduct Mandy, it’s up to Levi to find her. Driven to avoid the hour of hollow discontent that routinely plagues her at sundown, Mandy Foster has made choices she regrets. If anyone found out her secret, tradition dictates she would be shunned. She’s learned how to guard her heart, until she accepts the tender care of the one man who truly loves her. But if she admits her love for him, her secret could be exposed. Romantic, suspenseful, and filled with adventure,  Uncharted Redemption weaves dramatic new layers into life in the Land.

Now comes the third book in the series,  Uncharted Inheritance for release May 5Like the first two books, this too is written like a historical, set like a sci-fi, and filled with romance. Uncharted Inheritance concludes this suspenseful story of life in a hidden land.

Description:  Bethany Colburn finally turns eighteen, and Everett Foster is about to confess his love for her. When a new man arrives in the village of Good Springs, he brings charm Bethany has never encountered and illness the Land has never known. While the medicinal power of the gray leaf tree is put to the test, and the Colburn family’s strength is stretched thin, Bethany must learn to protect her true inheritance. Uncharted Inheritance weaves heartbreak and hope while delivering long-awaited answers in this suspenseful story of life in a hidden land.

Uncharted Inheritance is also available as an audiobook.

Authors Supporting Our Troops 2015 Puts Books into the Hands of OurTroops Serving in Remote Areas

Last year I wrote about ASOT2014, but it’s such a worthy cause and effort I want  to give it a little more ink as it enters its second year.

Authors Supporting Our Troops is a small but dynamic operation to put author donated/author signed print books into the hands of our troops (all military branches) serving in remote areas (Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait) where days can be long and diversions difficult to find. Books are in such short supply that one single copy can make the rounds throughout the entire base, some soldiers reading it two or three times. ASOT sends boxes of books to individual soldiers to share with his or her comrades, offering a variety of genres and hours of entertainment.

Launched January 1st and continuing through May 1st, ASOT2015 hopes to exceed the accomplishments of ASOT2014, when authors and publishers donated 2,900 books, all of
which made it to our troops.

“Our goal this time is to put 3,500+ print books into the hands of soldiers in remote areas of the world like Kuwait and Afghanistan,” says event organizer Armand Rosamilia. “If a soldier is stationed in Germany or San Diego, they can easily buy a book or have access to TV, games, e-readers, etc. This event is for the men and women of the military who don’t have easy access to read. It’s something for their downtime between hostile situations.”

What types of books are accepted?

“Everything but blatant porn,” says Rosamilia. “Nothing taboo or racist, nothing pushing the
envelope. Antimilitary books might not be so popular. Last year many authors didn’t think their romance books would fit, but they did. Soldiers will read anything if it’s the only book around. They like to read a good paranormal romance, you know.”

How do you get the soldier’s addresses?

“From you,” Rosamilia says. “We don’t work with a company or the military. We rely on family and friends of soldiers overseas to get in touch with them to make sure they’re interested in handing out the books. Then we need their COMPLETE address (including their name and APO/FPO) to ship to them. That’s it. The goal is 35 soldiers in 2015 or more.” Right now, the project is short on names, so anyone who knows a soldier serving in these areas is encouraged to contact him at armandrosamilia@gmail.com.

How are the books shipped?

ASOT2015 relies on the good old United States Postal Service. “No other carrier is as cheap or easy as the USPS,” says Rosamilia. “It costs about 25 dollars to ship a box of books (about 50 books per box.)”

How  can I help?

Authors and small publishers interested in donating books can reach out to Rosamilia via email at armandrosamilia@gmail.com.

Many people have come forward to help with shipping costs, donating money directly to the cause. Email Rosamilia to make a donation, any amount helps.

ASOT2015 also has T-shirts and hoodies available in a variety of colors and styles for purchase via TeeSpring to help defray costs. They’re simple, inexpensive, and available to anyone, author or not.

Also, Rosamilia asks authors to spread the word about this event. “Even though we hit so many authors the last time around (about 325 or so), that is such a small blip of the writers and publishers out there. If you belong to an author’s organization, let them know about it. Ask your publisher to get in touch. Many of them sent us boxes of books last year, which was great.”

Today's Guest: Science Fiction Author Elizabeth N. Love

Are you a science fiction fan? I  have to admit this is not an area I visit too often, I have enough trouble managing life in the real world. As an author I enjoy creating new worlds, even though mine are here on earth and usually in the present time, and admire authors who create  universes unlike any we've encountered or imagined  before. When they weave together new worlds with compelling stories and believable characters good fiction results.

Say hello to today's guest Elizabeth N. Love, author of the science fiction series Stormflies, published by Creativia. The first in the series, Pouring the Cup, was released in October. Elizabeth is currently finishing Book Two, Drinking the Wine, for a 2015 release, and is working on a paranormal romance, a non-fiction narrative, and a new sci-fi novel based on an alternate past. She is a native of Kansas who grew up on the prairie in rural small towns. From a very young age she enjoyed creating stories and poems and practices daily in the art of wordsmithing. She also enjoys other forms of art, such as drawing and making music. She lives near Kansas City with her family. Welcome to Adventures in Publishing, Elizabeth!

First of all, I want to thank Marianne for her support! I’m honored to find a home here. Today, I’m going to discuss a bit about my Science Fiction novel Pouring the Cup. This first novel in the series named Stormflies begins with the protagonist—a young woman living an unremarkable existence on a populated island—meeting her destiny. Pouring the Cup is just 99 cents from January 10-16, so be sure to grab a copy for your Kindle or Kindle App from Amazon.com. The book is also available through Kindle Unlimited.

About the Book

On the faraway planet of Bona Dea, in a society forged by ancient settlers, trouble is brewing. Young psychic Axandra, never comfortable with her gift, is being forced to use it for the benefit of her people as ruling matriarch of the entire world and host to a powerful entity known only as the Goddess.

Struggling with her fate, used as a pawn between warring factions, life for Axandra is almost too much to bear. Even the ministrations of her beloved companion, Quinn, may not prove powerful enough to overcome the stress threatening to destroy Axandra's fragile soul.

About Bona Dea

During the long voyage from Earth, the human immigrants found that, in order to ensure the best rate of survival, they needed to change the structure of their community. Among the 13 generation ships used to transport the settlers, resources were precious, recycling was integral to a continuous supply of resources, and equal distribution was mandatory. This lifestyle carried over into their planet-based settlements. Living under a set of Covenants that are intended to guarantee equality for all members of their colony, the people of Bona Dea work together to provide food, clothing, medical care, and housing to everyone, with each individual providing services and goods as required.

Bona Dea is part of a binary star system of 11 planets and possesses two moons. The planet consists of one large continent, hundreds of small offshore islands, and an even larger ocean. A single towering mountain range bisects the continent. On the western side of the mountain range rages the Great Storm, an electromagnetic phenomenon little understood by science.  The Storm rages continuously in the same location at the same intensity and has done so for over 300 years. The Prophets live beneath the Great Storm, isolated from the rest of the population.

The remainder of the continent is divided into four governmental regions, each of which elects representatives to serve on the People’s Council, the main legislative body for the 600,000 plus residents. The Protectress acts as a voice for the people and her job is to weigh any and all decisions of the Council against the Covenants in order to ensure compliance.

There is no money. Crime is at a minimum. People are encouraged to pursue occupations that interest and fulfill them, as long as they volunteer to provide infrastructure services from time-to-time, such as disaster relief, road repair, crop sowing and harvesting, and building maintenance. At the age of 17, most young adults leave home for their first work assignment, based on their personal interests, and have a chance to travel to other parts of the continent.

Creating this World

I’m a lover of Star Trek and Gene Rodenberry’s vision that the world can become a place where everyone is valued for their skills and everyone has an opportunity to reach their potential. Using his ideals, I created a world where people are always willing to help each other succeed and prosper.

The best way to accomplish this in fiction is to have the people start over on a new world. They look at the universe with a different set of criteria than we do at present, impacted by their long journey to escape an Earth that has collapsed both ecologically and economically. The world came first, giving me a sturdy platform on which to build adventure, conflict, and resolution. My characters, noted by reviewers as realistic and relatable, grew from brief sketches in short stories to richly composed individuals with complex relationships and worldviews. These characters will continue to evolve as the series progresses, and new adventures will unfold.

Writing has always been a cathartic exercise for me. I use words to express feelings and ideas that might not otherwise be discussable in the public realm of a small town. I am constantly reading and researching to enrich my stories, as well as experimenting with the human condition, even when the characters aren’t human.

I hope you enjoy reading Pouring the Cup.
