New Release Spotlight: "Christmas at Blue Hydrangeas" is Now Available on Amazon

I'm pleased to announce my latest story "Christmas at Blue Hydrangeas" is now available in the Amazon store for Kindle.

C@BH, as I like to call it, is the prequel to "Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer's love story." So many readers said they were enchanted with Jack and Sara and their bed and breakfast that I was inspired to write more stories about the Harmon's and their welcoming home.

It’s Christmas Eve, and while Sara waits for Jack and their son David to arrive home to Blue Hydrangeas, their Cape Cod bed and breakfast, a blizzard threatens to close the bridges, stranding all travelers to and from the Cape. As she prepares for the holiday, a few unexpected visitors arrive at the inn, all sharing the common bond of grief. Sara is determined the storm and sadness will not spoil Christmas, and that Santa will find his way to two fatherless children far from home. A sweet slice-of-life story about loved ones and strangers coming together to share the spirit of Christmas.

I must admit it took me a very long time to write this story, which consumes all of 49 pages. Many obstacles got in my way: My chronic repetitive strain issues which prohibit writing on a regular schedule, and caregiving for my mother and stepfather, which came to its own natural end. Perfectionism also held me up because I wanted this story to be as special as "Blue Hydrangeas," to be "beautiful," as so many readers said it was. I hope I have succeeded.

I love the short story form. It's a challenge to include all the details of the plotline and qualities of the characters and tie it up tight in a few pages, which may also be a reason that it took almost two years to complete this one. My last book, "Swim Season," weighs in at two 2 pounds, 593 pages and took five years to write. Hopefully I'll get a little faster in 2019.

Blog Tour: The Caselli Family Series by Ta'Mara Hanscom

Ta'Mara has published her Caselli Family series before, but she is now relaunching the series starting with The Pretender and Pit of Ambition!  Join this super fun blog tour and find out more about the first two books (of five). Also, make sure you check out the great giveaway!

About the Books

The Pretender: A Blackguard in Disguise is the first volume of 5 in the family epic series The Caselli Family Series

It begins in South Dakota in 1975 where eighteen-year-olds could order 3.2 beers in a bar and loaded guns were kept under the counter. Frankie Valli sang My Eyes Adored You, and American soldiers returning from Vietnam struggled with their new reality.

It’s within this tumultuous season of American history that Tillie Caselli meets Noah Hansen, and they are never the same again. Their lives were mysteriously intertwined – and had been for many years – yet they had no idea.

From the moment they met, Tillie and Noah wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, but a deliberate omission will keep them apart – and that same omission will be responsible for the escape of a murderer, and a bride’s deception.

These compelling stories are interwoven with Biblical truths and light-hearted, real life events from the author’s own past. Easy to understand and relate to, as well as encouraging.

Swim Season Goes to Taiwan!

Photo by Norman Chan via Adobe Stock
Ah, the wonders of the internet! For writers it can make incredible connections and collaborations. This one happened with Swim Season, my YA sports novel released last October.

Long story short - I met a writer named Annie Douglass Lima through an online writers group (cleanindiereads.com) a while back and we've supported each other through many endeavors. Annie's an American teacher living in Taiwan.

It happened one day that she sat next to the school's swim coach and somehow the subject of my book came up. The coach, Randy Schmidt, was interested in the book and thought his students/swimmers might be too. The problem was he preferred to read a paperback - not an ebook - and the cost of shipping a physical book halfway across the world was 34-66 dollars, a deal breaker. Annie and Randy came up with a great idea: his parents planned to visit him in Taiwan for Thanksgiving. I could mail a book to them in Florida and they'd personally deliver it to him.

It worked! He received the book and circulated it among his swimmers. Here are their comments on the story, including some background on the individual swimmers. It's fascinating to see their responses to the book. Big thanks to all who took the time to read it, and especially to Annie and Randy for making this happen.

12 Reasons to Gift a Book from the AlzAuthors Bookstore

photo credit: Lilie Graphie via StockAdobe
Most likely, you know someone caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia. With 5.4 million Americans affected, this disease affects the lives of so many of our families, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. We may feel inclined to do something, to help, but may not know what to do, or how to do it, or when.

The Christmas season provides us with the perfect opportunity to reach out to provide support, caring, understanding, and of course a meaningful gift. A book can be at the top of that list, because caregivers are often thirsting for knowledge, longing for support, or searching for guidance to help them get through their challenging days. What better way to learn than through the experiences and stories of others?

And don't forget that, in addition to the caregivers, many others are in need of Alzheimer's resources, such as your physician or nurse,  a care facility in your neighborhood, the visiting nurse or home care agency staff, and your town or school's lending library.

Here are twelve reasons to visit the AlzAuthors Bookstore for the perfect present:

1. You will not find a more easily navigable assortment of books on the Alzheimer's experience anywhere else.

2. Every book in our bookstore was vetted by the founders of AlzAuthors, all of whom have experience as caregivers. Each  was carefully evaluated for content and quality prior to inclusion. You can be assured that you are purchasing a quality book.

3. Most of the books are the personal stories of their authors, or have arisen out of deeply personal experience with the disease. The stories contain truth, and are often heart-wrenching, sometimes heartbreaking. They are compelling, believable, and honest.

4. The books are available in a variety of formats - print, digital, audio - which will satisfy any reader.

5. The titles cover multiple genres: memoir, fiction (including young adult and children's), and nonfiction. There's something for everyone. Our categories: Caring for Parents or Grandparents; Caring for Spouses or Partners; Living with Alzheimer’s/Dementia; Books for Children and Teens; and Helpful Information For Caregivers.

6. The books are easily purchased via Amazon. Please visit an individual book's page on AlzAuthors to find its availability on iBooks, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, and other retailers.

7. A book is a gift that can be used again and again. These resources can be read and reread, and consulted at any time.

8. A book can be regifted, shared with others who may need its wisdom and know-how.

9. There's a perfect price for every shopper. Most ebooks start at just 2.99, and paperbacks run around $10-20.

10. Books are easy to wrap, especially ebooks.

11. The small ones make excellent stocking stuffers.

12. You can support your favorite books and authors by sharing them with others.

AlzAuthors is an Amazon Affiliate and will receive a small commission from books purchased through our bookstore. These funds are used to cover costs associated with running AlzAuthors and do not affect the actual author's royalties or cost the buyer additional fees.

Write What You Know and Then Some - Researching My Young Adult Novel Swim Season

My daughter had been swimming for five years when I came up with the idea to write a novel about girls’ varsity swimming. Sitting on those cold, hard bleachers season after season gave me more than a sore you-know-what. It sparked my imagination, creating a story line and cast of characters that would show in written form what high school swimming is like for these girls. As I wrote the story, they were always at the heart of it. I wrote it for them. And I wanted it to be as accurate and realistic as possible.

In many ways, writing Swim Season was natural and easy. Through many autumns, I’d watched my daughter and her team swim their hearts out, beside parents rooting for their own swimmers. In the beginning, I knew next to nothing about the sport, about swim meets. But as the years went on, I learned.

I learned simple things, like the order of events. Try finding your kid on a pool deck swarming with dozens of young swimmers in caps and goggles when you’re not sure which event it is, or whether your child is swimming in it or not. Impossible.

I chaperoned the waiting rooms where dozens of youngsters waited for their next event. Try to keep all that adrenaline in check.

I volunteered to time the races, and stood at the blocks, race after race, helping to make things run smoothly, making sure the right kid was in the right lane.

I helped out at the concession stand, serving up bagels and cream cheese.

I was involved with the fundraising activities, Picture Day, and put together the program for Senior Night for a number of years.

I went to 99 percent of the meets with my husband (we missed one when it was an hour away from our home on a week night.)

Most of my daughters’ friends were swimmers, so I got to know several of them up close and personal. They were an intelligent, ambitious, fantastic set of young women. When my book was criticized by a critique partner because the characters seemed “too smart,” I responded with, “Well, those are the girls I know.” The team had the highest GPA of all athletic teams at the high school year after year. Yes, swimmers are smart.

I took advantage of coaches I knew personally (and some I didn’t) to pick their brains, try out the story’s premise for believability, and tweak the details. Many thanks go to the following New York State coaches: Frank Woodward, Middletown High School; Justin Wright, Monroe-Woodbury High School; Jeremy Cuebas, Minisink Valley High School; and Danielle Lindner, former coach for Mount Saint Mary College, in Newburgh.

Early in the process, I sent out a tweet on Twitter, asking swimmers to complete a questionnaire for a new book about varsity swimming. Almost a dozen young swimmers – girls and boys -  responded, and we started dialogues that provided great background for my story. Some of them went on to become beta readers. All of them were thrilled at the idea of a book about them, about their sport.

As a reader, when the answers weren’t so simple I resorted to books. Michael Phelps’ biography No Limits: The Will to Succeed, with Alan Abrahamson, was more than worth its cost. Likewise, Amanda Beard’s memoir In the Water They Can't See You Cry gave me insight into how to build an Olympic silver medalist. Instruction books, such as Terry Laughlin’s Total Immersion, with John Delves, and Tracey McFarlane’s Mirande’s Championship Swimming with Kathlene Bissell, taught me the fine-tuning of technique. The Champion’s Mind: How Great Athletes Think, Train, and Thrive, by Jim Afremow, PhD, was instrumental in creating Aerin’s mental game. For inspiration I turned to Swimmers: Courage and Triumph by Larry Thomson.

Then there was the time when I decided to swim the race at the heart of my story. For a while I was taking Aquasize classes at my local YMCA. One day I got the idea to try to swim 500 yards. I wanted to see if I could do it, how long it would take, and how I would feel during and afterwards. I have never swum competitively, although I have always loved to swim and am capable of doing the freestyle. My first 500 clocked in at 30 minutes. I stopped after every length to catch my breath and chat with the other ladies in the Aquasize class. I kept at it, though, and after a few weeks managed to complete the 500 in 16 minutes, which was phenomenal for me. Of course, the time to beat in Swim Season is 4:52.50, which, for me, was in never never land. But, as a middle-aged woman with below-average fitness, I was proud of my achievement. In the end, unfortunately, it exacerbated my repetitive strain injuries and I had to give it up.

Writing Swim Season was an endeavor born of many resources, personal and professional. It’s recommended that we write what we know. I knew a lot about competitive swimming as a Swim Mom, but that was not enough to compose this story. I needed to reach out to many others - swimmers, coaches, parents, Olympians, and a psychologist – to nail the details. All of this, I believe, leads to a more credible, believable story with depth.

Swim Season is available in paperback and Kindle on Amazon.

Misty of Chincoteague: A Children’s Classic Defines an Island

In a gift shop
I’d venture to say most adults are familiar with Marguerite Henry’s classic children’s book Misty of Chincoteague. Published in 1947, it became a Newbery Honor Book, and in 1961 a major motion picture. It spawned a series of sequels. For decades, teachers assigned it to their students. It is as ingrained in our American culture as apple pie and ice cream. As an author, I marvel at the prospect of writing such a timeless, resilient book, just 173 pages long.

At the National Seashore gift shop
Chincoteague is a sleepy little island off the shore of Virginia, protected by the barrier island Assateague. Known primarily for the wild ponies that have lived on Assateague for more than 350 years, Henry’s book brought the town to national and worldwide renown. Visitors flock to the island to see the wild ponies. Each July more than 40,000 people attend the annual Pony Swim. And copies of Misty - and the subsequent books in the series - are available for purchase just about everywhere: gift shops, gas stations, delicatessens, hotels. Everywhere.

If you visit Chincoteague today, you will see evidence of Henry’s legacy all over the island. A statue depicting Misty is in the town center. The Beebe family, depicted in the book, owns and operates the Chincoteague Pony Center. During Pony Week, the Chamber of Commerce runs the Misty movie daily in the island’s lone movie theater.

Marguerite Henry was not a native of Chincoteague. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1902. On a visit to the island on Pony Penning Day, Henry learned the story of Misty, and wrote the book with illustrator Wesley Dennis. Published by Random House, it became a huge success, and launched her career as a children’s author. She published 59 books throughout her life, and won the Newbery Medal in 1946, 1948, and 1949. Her last book was Brown Sunshine of Sawdust Valley, a 93-page novel published in September 1996, when she was 94 years old. Marguerite Henry passed away in Rancho Santa Fe, California in 1997.

The Wild Ponies of Assateague Island

Assateague ponies walk the beach.

The 300 or so wild ponies that make their home on the 37-mile barrier island named Assateague are a national treasure. How they got there is up to debate. Some believe they’re descendants of survivors of a shipwrecked Spanish galleon some 350 years ago. Others surmise they're descended from herds local farmers brought to the island to graze tax-free. No matter how or why they came to inhabit this picturesque island, they are a wonder to behold. A glimpse of them grazing in the marshes, running on the beach, or swimming in the ocean evokes sentiments of freedom, mystery, and romance.

Assateague Island stretches from Maryland to Virginia off the Delmarva Peninsula on the Atlantic Coast. It enjoys protection from development and commercialism through the federal government via the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Department of Natural Resources. In 1965, an act of Congress designated it Assateague Island National Seashore. Left in its natural state, it’s subject to all the elements of nature without help from humans. A simple wire fence at the Virginia/Maryland state line separates each half of the island. The NPS manages the Maryland ponies, while The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company owns and manages the Virginia herd.

I’ve been visiting Assateague for more than ten years and never tire of its beautiful coastline, four-wheeling on its beaches, swimming in its waters, and, of course, seeing its beautiful ponies.

One of the best ways to enjoy the island is to visit via the sleepy little town of Chincoteague, Virginia, just minutes from Assategaue's beach. The ponies living on this end of the island are wild but not free. The CVFC guards them closely within acres of fenced land, limiting contact with humans. Interaction with people endangers the animals in a variety of ways: they’ve been hit and killed by automobiles and become accustomed to “people food,” unhealthy for them. They are also known to bite, kick, and injure those who get too close.

The ponies are herded three times a year – April, July, and October - for a head count and, if needed, medical care. July’s roundup is open to the public and a huge event. This is when the CVFC Saltwater Cowboys herd the animals for their annual Pony Week, which includes the Walk, Penning, Swim, Auction, and Carnival. This summer I had the pleasure of participating in my first Pony Week.

Saltwater Cowboys round up the north herd and walk them down the beach.

The events kicked off with the Pony Walk on Monday morning. At 5 am, my family ventured out to the north beach to watch the Cowboys escort 100+ ponies down the shoreline to newly built holding pens within the park. At that time, the public had the opportunity to view the ponies up close, although feeding and handling them was, as always, prohibited.

On Wednesday morning, more than 40,000 visitors flocked to Chincoteague, many before dawn, to watch the Cowboys move the animals from their pens in the national seashore park to marshes across from the island and, when the slack tide was just right, across the channel to Chincoteague.

The Pony Swim was quite a spectacle. The ponies, all natural swimmers, swam the channel in neck deep water while the Cowboys led them to shore. In the Swim's 91 year history not one pony has ever been lost.

Once on land, the Cowboys walked the ponies through town to the carnival grounds and penned them overnight. While there, veterinarians examined them for potential health issues and injuries.

A hungry foal munches on hay after the Pony Swim and walk through town.

On Thursday morning, the CVFC auctioned off this year’s foals. The auction has been an island tradition since 1925 to manage the population so resources aren't depleted. Once purchased, the ponies can be transported anywhere in the United States, and people come from all over to buy a Chincoteague pony. This summer, 57 ponies were sold (including 7 buybacks which were returned to the island) at an average bid of $2,659. Total sales were $151,55o. All proceeds benefit the fire department, currently raising funds for a new firehouse.

Early Friday morning, with much less fanfare, the cowboys led the ponies back to Assateague Island where they resumed their natural lifestyle away from the interruption and interference of humans.

Assateague ponies at home on the beach.

On the Maryland side of the island, the ponies roam free within the confines of the national seashore. They have become acclimated to humans and have no problem raiding campsites and picnic areas for food. For everyone’s safety, interaction with them in any way – getting within ten feet, touching or feeding them – is forbidden because of their unpredictability as wild animals. Violators may be fined. There are no roundups, no Pony Swims, no auctions. The NPS manages the herd’s population with contraception. There is no veterinary care unless due to accident or injury. The Maryland herd is truly wild and free.

The best way to enjoy the Maryland half of Assateague is via Ocean City, as different from Chincoteague Island as night is to day. Ocean City is an exciting vacation spot with more restaurants and shopping than you can fit into your stay, amusement parks, a 2.5-mile boardwalk, and the accompanying crowds and traffic. A visit to Assateague is a terrific way to relax from all that sensory overload.

Whether you choose to enjoy the wild horses of Assateague from the eclectic Ocean City or the idyllic Chincoteague Island, a visit is a must to-do on your bucket list.

Swim Season is Now Available for Preorders!

Have you caught Olympic fever? I have, and a mighty bad case of it too. I can't resist watching these athletes and their magnificent performances. And the US has so many outstanding athletes - in swimming, gymnastics, and track and field, to name just a few - that I find myself glued to the TV every night and checking results on my phone throughout the day, often to the detriment of my to do list.

One item on that list was to publish my epic swim novel Swim Season in Spring 2016 and heavily market and promote it during these Olympics. I've been working on the book for almost five years, and its progress has been interrupted repeatedly by my repetitive strain injuries and more recently a family medical crisis. I was in the final editing stages and working on a production schedule when that erupted, and once again I came to a full stop and had to shelve my plans. Sadly I realized I would not meet my goal.

As the crisis passed and life became more manageable, I revisited my project and realized the book was almost done. And the Olympics were on their way. Not all was lost. I could launch the book during the Games with Amazon Kindle preorders and promote it while the world was focused on the toughest, most competitive swimming races in the sport.

It's not the launch I planned, but it seemed foolish to let this opportunity pass when I was so close.

So, Swim Season is now available for preorder on Amazon Kindle. The official release date is November 1st. I'm experimenting with Kindle Select the first 3-6 months, so publishing on other digital platforms - iBooks, Kobo, and Nook - will be on hold until the results are in. I'm not in favor of limiting myself to just one platform but I'm curious to see if being Kindle exclusive and in Kindle Unlimited has any benefits. I'll be sure to tell you how it all works out and if/when the book will be available on other platforms. I'll publish the paperback version sometime between now and then. And an audiobook will be forthcoming in 2017.

Swim Season is a Young Adult (YA) novel suitable for ages 12 and up. It's a Clean Indie Read (CR4U) free of sexual content, profanity, and violence. Perfect for family reading.
You can read the first two chapters here.

To preorder Swim Season please visit its Amazon page.

Books and their authors do not become successful on their own. It takes a ton of dedicated fans and friends to move them along. You can support me and this book by joining my street team. Members help promote the book on social media and through personal contacts. Each member will receive a free copy - digital or paperback - and other assorted swag when available. To sign up send me an email at mariannesciucco@gmail.com with your mailing address so I can send you an official Swim Season bookmark as a thank you. And follow me on Facebook and Twitter. Retweet, repost and share my news. Remember to tag me so I can thank you properly.

Reviews on launch day are like gold. Request an advance copy and be one of the first to post a review. Simply drop me a line at mariannesciucco@gmail.com and I'll send you a digital copy to read on your PC, laptop, tablet, or phone. Comments, especially the constructive, critical kind, are welcome. We all make mistakes and if you spot a typo, grammar issue, or structural problem please let me know.

And thanks for following me on this journey. So many times I wanted to give up, but my love for the sport and the voices of Aerin and her teammates on the Two Rivers Trailblazers swim and dive team would not let me quit. They've got a terrific story that will resonate with swimmers and swim fans and with sports lovers as well. Who doesn't love a great race?

So happy to finally start the next chapter of Swim Season!

Why did I write a novel about girls varsity swimming? Here's the interview. Disclaimer: this video was produced in 2014 and some aspects of the story discussed (i.e. 1979 was changed to 1989) and part of my marketing plans have changed (see above.)
